Riserva Dei Padri Serviti 2016 – Gattavecchi
The Riserva Dei Padri Serviti is an Italian wine from the noble Montepulciano grape. This great red wine, produced in the heart of Tuscany by one of the historical companies in the area, Cantina Gattavecchi, is characterised by a fine but intense aroma with a light hint of shrinking violets. With a 90 out of 100 aggregated critic score from wine-searcher.com, you know this is a superb wine. We had the opportunity to taste the 2016 vintage available from Casavini. This a strong bodied with a slightly dry taste enveloped in a very elegant aromatic finish… truly a masterclass Italian classic.

About the Sangiovese grape (Wine-Searcher.com)
Sangiovese has been grown in central Italy for generations, though recent grapevine research suggests the variety is not as ancient as once thought. The quality of Sangiovese wine can be notoriously variable. But, in the 1980s, drastically improved winemaking techniques saw a significant shift toward more quality-oriented releases. Sangiovese is generally prized for its acid structure, firm tannins, savory characters and aromas of dark cherries.
In Tuscany, Sangiovese is the sole grape variety permitted in the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and provides the backbone to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the popular wines of Chianti where it must account for 80 percent of the blend.
Led by the so-called “Super Tuscans”, the Toscana IGT category allows winemakers more freedom to blend indigenous Italian grapes (principally Sangiovese) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. See Cabernet – Merlot – Sangiovese for more information on these wines, and the section below on winemaking and blending with other varieties.
About Cantina Gattavecchi (Wineshop.it)
The Gattavecchi family have been producing wine in Montepulciano for five generations, and have played a significant role among the historical companies that introduced Vino Nobile di Montepulciano to Italy and the world at large. Gattavecchi wines originate from vineyards located on the best hillsides in the administrative area of Montepulciano and San Gimignano. This means that the company is in a position to select the very best grapes, not only for the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, but also for the production of a splendid Vernaccia di San Gimignano and certain dessert wines, such as Vin Santo. Gattavecchi wines are refined in casks and barrels in the historical underground cellars of the twelfth century Padri Serviti monastery, which nestles beneath the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Montepulciano. Members of the Gattavecchi family personally concern themselves with the production of their wines. Under the supervision of Valente Gattavecchi, the sons and daughters, Luca, Gionata and Daniela closely follow every phase of the production process step by step. It is a job that, above all, is motivated by a love of the land, a passion for wine, and a desire to work alongside friends, colleagues and customers, some of whom are now spread throughout the world.
